A winning cocktail mix as Independent Spirit of Bath opens
Two barmen behind a new business venture in the city are hoping that experience mixed with a passion for spirits will prove a winning cocktail.
Independent Spirit of Bath has opened at Terrace Walk, transforming the old On the Video Front store into an Aladdin’s cave of spirits, wines, beers and ciders.

Friends Christian Morrish, 26, and Chris Scullion, 33, hope to inspire a new generation of drink connoisseurs in Bath.
Mr Scullion, who used to work at Sub 13 on George Street, said: “As a new venture it is worrying but we have enough experience in Bath and know there is the market here. There’s a growing food movement too, which we want to be part of.”

Independent Spirit is far removed from the traditional off-licence – a sector in decline with the demise of firms such as Threshers – and does not have shelves of discount offers.
Mr Morrish, who worked at Circo Bar, said: “We never wanted it to be a standard off-licence. There’s no point stocking what the supermarkets stock because they can undercut us. Our backgrounds are finding interesting spirits and that is what we want to bring to Bath.”
The store has a range of spirits from vodka to gin, as well as specialist beers, local ciders and wines, along with a whisky room – an area of the shop dedicated to single malt scotch whisky.
Mr Scullion, who once worked for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, said: “We’ve gone for independent bottling rather than brand names because it offers better quality.”
The two men run tasting events at venues in the city and want to create a fleet of mobile cocktail bars.

“It is rare for me to have a good word to say about anything. But, I stopped in here the other day and you couldn't want to meet more knowledgeable and friendly people. A welcome addition.”
