Revival of funny and intriguing play

Four big names from the world of theatre head for Bath next week to star in a revival of David Storey's play Home, made famous in the 1970s when John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson took to the stage together.

Now the stars are David Calder, Stephen Moore, Lesley Joseph and Nichola McAuliffe who perform in this wonderfully funny, intriguing and poignant play as part of The Peter Hall Season at the Theatre Royal in Bath.

The play opens on Tuesday, July 7 and runs until August 1 in repertory with Bernard Shaw's The Apple Cart and Terence Rattigan's The Browning Version.

In Home, Harry and Jack while away the hours in a sunny garden with rambling reminiscence and genteel chatter, watching the clouds and playing cards.

But the arrival of raucous Marjorie and Kathleen both lowers the tone and raises the roof.

As the mismatched couples banter it becomes clear that all may not be quite as it seems.

David Storey was a professional rugby league player before achieving huge success as a writer.

His play Home is one of the most acclaimed works of the late 20th century.

Lesley Joseph is known to millions of television viewers for her leading roles as Dorian in the long-running BBC comedy Birds Of A Feather and as Rachel in ITV's Night And Day.

Nichola McAuliffe is best-known on television for the role of Sheila in more than 50 episodes of Surgical Spirit.

To book tickets for Home call the Box Office on 01225 448844.

If you would like to win a pair of tickets to see Home on Thursday, July 9 at 7.30pm, just answer the following question.

Put your answer on a postcard with your name, address and daytime telephone number and send it to Theatre Royal Competition, The Guide, The Bath Chronicle, Westpoint, James Street West, Bath BA1 2DA. The writer of the first correct answer out of the hat on Monday morning will get the tickets.
