Best programme yet at the Mission

Wednesday, December 03, 2008, 13:49

Bath's Mission Theatre has just produced its most ambitious programme yet with a new look, easy-to-read guide to the events that take place throughout the spring.

The new format guide tells theatregoers a little bit about the history of the building before taking them through an event-by-event look at what's taking place in the months ahead.

As well as lots of theatre – including several productions from Next Stage – there is a full programme of music including performances by Julie Felix and ancient rockers Stackridge.

The new season opens with Ian Pope's one man comedy show which comes to Bath after a successful run at the London Solo Festival.

Next Stage Youth have an enrolment session of Sunday January 18 while on the same day Sally Noble gives a poetry speaking masterclass.

Next Stage, which has its home at the Mission, performs Emile Zola's Terese Raquin in late January. It's a tale of love and murder which was condemned as shocking when it was first published.

As usual many Sunday nights feature the popular Poetry Cafe which regularly attracts big name poets and regularly sells out.

In late February Wild Thyme Music presents a mixed range of concerts taking place across a whole week starting with Stackridge who are still rocking 40 years after first appearing at the Glastonbury Festival and ending with 60s icon Julie Felix.

In between are a host of local musicians, an old tyme music night, music from Malawi, jazz and a performance by Beck Sian, cousin of Kate Bush.

Another Next Stage production is Helene Hanff's 84 Charing Cross Road which is the delightful story about a love affair between two book lovers.

In mid March Sweet Ladies perform theatre in English and in French, here a tale of two contemporary women who can only communicate through scenes of Shakespeare.

The spring programme draws almost to a close with an evening with The Amazing Street Cred Band before Next Stage performs Kindertransport. This is one of a series of plays chosen in Next Stage's 15th year to enable some of the talented Next Stage Youth youngsters to collaborate with the adult company.

This is an account of how one family is affected by the Holocaust.

Looking ahead to the summer Next Stage will be performing Torch Song Trilogy which the company is also taking to London's West End and also Peter Shaffer's Amadeus which tours to the Minack Open Air Theatre in Cornwall in August.
