Two taken to hospital after fire at Bath flats
An 80-year-old woman was one of two people taken to hospital after a fire in a block of flats in Bath last night.
In a separate incident fire crews also pulled a man from the river who was suffering from suspected hypothermia.
Engines were called to The Paragon just after 8pm after reports of a fire in a property.
Three pumps and a turntable ladder attended the scene and found an 80-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man suffering from smoke inhalation.
They were given oxygen therapy before being taken to the Royal United Hospital by ambulance.
Five fire fighters entered the basement flat and found a fire in the storage area leading onto the garden.
It is thought to have been started accidently after a cigarette was not properly extinguished and Avon Fire and Rescue Service have urged people to be careful when smoking.
Fortunately no one was seriously injured but the flats were left heavily smoke logged.
Crews were also called out to Midland Road at 1am to reports that a man was in the river.
Two pumps, a boat and a rescue vehicle attended the scene and found a man, who was thought to be around 30 years old, stuck in the water.
He was standing knee-deep in the river and could not get up the steep bank, which was around eight ft high.
Fire fighters threw him a line and pulled him to safety.
He was taken to the Royal United Hospital by ambulance and was thought to be suffering from hypothermia.
