"Fans can roar Bath City into the third round"

Thursday, November 26, 2009, 11:10

Bath City skipper Jim Rollo is calling on the people of Bath to turn out in force for this weekend's FA Cup clash with Forest Green Rovers.

The club captain believes City have a glorious opportunity to reach the third round and go into Sunday's draw alongside the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal.

And he is urging local folk to play their part by packing out Twerton Park for Saturday's game (3pm) and cheering City on to another famous upset.

"It makes such a difference when there is a large crowd," said Rollo, who has played more than 350 times for City but only once before at this stage of the competition, at Peterborough United in 2004.

"I must have had 100 phone calls over the past fortnight from people asking me for tickets. If there is that kind of response across the area then we should get a good attendance.

"It will be a special day anyway but it will make it that bit more special if there is a good atmosphere.

"We know those who come along will make a noise. The support the travelling fans gave us at Grimsby in the last round was fantastic and I have great memories of them joining us on the pitch at the end of the Peterborough game – and we lost that one!

"I think we can win on Saturday, though. You do not want to get too cocky because football can bite you where it hurts but we went to Grimsby in good spirits and I am sensing the same atmosphere in the squad this week.

"Forest Green are a full-time outfit and any game in the second round of the FA Cup is not going to be easy but we are quietly confident.

"Opportunities like this don't come around very often – I have been here eight years and this is only the second time we have reached this stage – so we have to make the most of it."

Rollo – one of six former Forest Green players in the City squad – also believes fate might be on his team's side after a difficult few months off the pitch.

"It's funny how things turn out," he said. "We lost revenue and training facilities when TeamBath pulled out at the end of last season.

"Then I was at a meeting with the manager and the fans in April when the chairman said how tight things were financially.

"But that has brought everyone together – the fans, the players and the board – and we are all pushing in the same direction. Maybe that unity has brought Lady Luck on our side as well."

City have a clean bill of health for the game, with Gethin Jones able to replace the suspended Matt Coupe after recovering from a groin strain.

Striker Stuart Douglas missed last weekend's FA Trophy defeat at Maidenhead United with a stomach bug but will be fit for this Saturday.

Forest Green, who have suffered back-to-back home defeats against Stevenage and Oxford United this week, are expected to recall Tomi Ameobi for the cup tie.

Ameobi, the younger brother of Newcastle United striker Shola, will start up front in place of the on-loan Danny Powell.

Ben Joyce is expected to switch to the right of midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
