Adie wary of fighting on too many fronts

Bath City kick off another cup campaign this weekend when they travel to Blue Square South rivals Maidenhead United in the FA Trophy.

But while manager Adie Britton set an extended Trophy run as one of his pre-season targets, he admits it could prove too much of a distraction from his main aim – reaching the Blue Square South play-offs.

"We are overdue a good run in the Trophy and this Saturday's game is important to us," he said.

"But we have to be realistic enough to say we cannot compete on three fronts with a squad of 17 players, especially if we do manage to get through to the third round of the FA Cup.

"With the way the league is shaping up, Newport are waving goodbye at the top but everyone else is bunching up and it is looking very open for the play-offs.

"The most important thing is for us to be in a decent position at Christmas so we can really make a push for the top five in the New Year.

"So the priority is the league but if we do go on a good run in the Trophy, I would ask the board to release some of the prize money to bring in more players."

Victory at York Road on Saturday would add £3,000 to City's coffers and continue their fine unbeaten record against the Magpies, which has seen them win seven and draw one of their previous eight meetings.

Maidenhead's 3-2 win over Basingstoke on Saturday was their first victory in five games but Britton is still expecting a tough test.

"It will be a difficult game because Maidenhead are a decent side," he said.

"They either seem to get good results or bad results but they have got some ability and Kieran Knight up front always causes us problems.

"The game is also difficult in the context of where it falls. We have just played two tough league games and there is massive expectancy for the FA Cup game the week after.

"No-one around Bath is talking about the Maidenhead game, everyone is taking about Forest Green Rovers, so the challenge for us is to keep our concentration.

"I certainly won't be holding any players back. If they are fit they will play, it's as simple as that."

That means key defender Chris Holland, who was left hobbling after last weekend's win over Chelmsford after taking a knock below the knee, will line-up on Saturday if he passes a fitness test in training tonight.

With Gethin Jones still sidelined by a groin strain, Matt Coupe will continue at centre-half but will be suspended for the following three games, including the FA Cup tie.

If a replay is needed, it will take place at Twerton Park on Tuesday (7.45pm).
