Joanna Lumley voted London hero
The Absolutely Fabulous star - who has been campaigning for Gurkhas' rights - received 34 per cent of votes from Londoners in a survey by Halifax Home Insurance, championing her as their star of the capital.
Billy Connolly was voted celebrity hero of Scotland, Sir Paul McCartney was named star hero for the North West, Ant and Dec took the title for the North East and Sir Tom Jones was the number one Welsh celebrity hero in the poll.
Liam Neeson won the vote for Northern Ireland, Stephen Fry was the most popular for the region of East Anglia and Julie Walters was voted the Midlands' celebrity hero.
Harry Potter author JK Rowling was the most popular choice for the South West while it was explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes who got the most votes in the South East.
