Recently we have heard a great deal about appalling lack of care and indeed, of neglect and cruelty handed out within some parts of the NHS. Clearly this deeply shameful situation must be dealt with in the most forceful manner.

However, the recent experience of my family has encouraged me to write in praise our NHS here in Bath. My son was involved in a serious accident in the French Alps a few days after Christmas. He was treated for twelve days in a trauma unit in Sallanches.

The care he received there was not bad but when we returned to Bath we truly appreciated just how much better the service was here.

The nature of his injury meant that my son required treatment from our GP (Rush Hill Surgery) the fracture clinic, X-ray and vascular studies departments, the out of hours team, the ambulatory clinic all at the RUH, and also the orthopaedic unit at Frenchay hospital. WIthout exception everyone we encountered was kind, helpful, knowledgeable and took time to address our concerns.

Despite various complications resulting from the injury, we now feel confident about the care he is receiving. So a big thank you to everyone we encountered and also to the vast majority of NHS staff whose work so often goes unsung. The NHS is uncelebrated in the UK and yet for many of us, when we need it, it is there to provide a humane and effective healthcare of the highest standard.

“Having recently been discharged from the Philip Yeoman orthopaedic ward i can also attest to the high quality of emergency and in-patient care, however the problem at the RUH is for the casualties waiting to be admitted facing prolonged delays. The staff are working under extreme pressure which will worsen when the Min. and Riverside transfer there.”
