BATH and North East Somerset residents are being asked how their council should make budget cuts.

The authority has to save £17.8 million by 2015, and the council says it must become more efficient.

The resources policy development and scrutiny committee is due to discuss how this could happen at a meeting on Monday, November 21.

The resources service plan is the third of five reports which set out the organisation’s financial position and how services will be provided to residents over the next three years.

Council spokesman James Hinchcliffe said: “A reduced grant from the Coalition Government, high inflation, increasing demand for our services, and the impact of new legislation make balancing the budget extremely challenging.”

“How about stop making people redundant for a massive cost, then employing expensive consultants (preferably related to BANES top brass) in their place?

Also stop paying the likes of PWC to carry out £100,000 reviews with no definite deliverables (or to cover the £100k in the first place).

Also, how much so they spend on comms people to monitor the BC website all day?”

“1) search the BANES personnel files for any post with "sustainable" or "equality" in the job title
    2) compile a mailing list
    3) write "YOU'RE FIRED" in an email
    4) press "Send"”

“Get rid of all the wasters that call themselfs local councillers.........doing nothing for the local area and just in it for themselves........

Interesting! Any chance of you standing at the next election and showing me how it should be done Dodeperks?

Need to improve your spelling though if you want to fill in your application forms accurately.”

“We have highly paid and well experienced professional staff, we elect councillors to make the policy and within the body of councillors we have Cabinet executives also well remunerated, as well as paying expenses to the elected members generally. So why can they not, between them, come up with the goods? The buck stops with them when decisions are taken, not with the electorate; their decision comes later at the polling booth.
I have some empathy with Dave_Weston in his view that a Zero Based Budget exercise might concentrate the mind wonderfully.

“Don't bring in a team of London consultants every time a decision needs to be made, such as redesigning road sweeper's brushes or re-locating a street lamp.”
