Bath's fourth annual Comedy Festival certainly isn't short of variety this year, providing a mixture of stand-up, street theatre and music, walks, workshops and magic.

A diverse line up from household names to local favourites star in a range of events, offering something for every age group and interest, promising this year's festival to be one of the strongest line ups yet.

The events are set to take place in various venues throughout Bath, including The Rondo Theatre, Baroque Nightclub Comedy Theatre, St James Wine Vaults and The Pump Room.

Widcombe Social Club is set to host more than 50 performers throughout the 11 day festival.

The first heat of the New Act Competition launches the festival's events today Thursday, March 29. Thirty five of the UK's best up and coming comics will compete in five heats during the festival to reach the Grand Final at Widcombe Social Club, compared by multi award winning comedian Phil Kay.

The Roman Baths and Pump Room host the festival's Charity Ball tomorrow, raising funds for Natural Theatre's projects for young people and disabled actors.

At this black tie or Roman themed event, guests can expect to enjoy live music from the highly accomplished Struttgater Saloniker Orchestra from their repertoire of more than 100 numbers from various genres.

Following his sell-out tour in Australia, and recent sell-out performances in Edinburgh, award winning Piff the Magic Dragon takes to the stage in Widcombe Social Club on Saturday.

Last of the Magic Dragons combines comedy magic and mind reading, including a levitating Chihuahua and tricks which become increasingly impressive as the show progresses, to leave its audience astonished and entertained.

Self appointed German Comedy Ambassador to the United Kingdom Henning Wehn brings his sell-out Edinburgh show No Surrender to Widcombe Social Club on Sunday.

Henning has appeared on BBC Radio's Unbelievable Truth and News Quiz as well as numerous well known television shows, such as comedy panel series QI and Dave's One Night Stand.

Widcombe Social Club again boasts one of the biggest names at this year's festival, Jarred Christmas. Having appeared on popular television shows Mock The Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Dave's One Night Stand to name a few, his show Let's Go Mofo! promises to be one of the most in demand and entertaining performances of the festival.

Numerous events this year are taking the Comedy Festival beyond indoor venues, to the streets of Bath. On Sunday The Natural Youth Theatre will be taking to the city centre to perform their interpretations of the Best of British, inspired by an Olympic and Jubilee year.

Following this, Arthur Smith's Great Easter Egg Hunt will also be taking place on the streets of Bath on Saturday, April 7, in which Grumpy Old Men's Arthur Smith will be combining comedy forces with the Natural Theatre Company and many others to provide a mystery walking tour, where participants can expect plenty of amusement, entertainment and prizes.

Another event bringing comedy to the streets is the Bizarre Bath tour returning to the festival again this year.

The opening tour takes place tomorrow and continues to run at 8pm, every evening of the festival.

Tours leave from the Huntsman Inn and provide roughly 90 minutes of entertainment exploring the city of Bath from an unusual yet amusing perspective, testing the traditional image of the city.

Among the treats in store during the festival are Alan Francis tomorrow night and the Real MacGuffins on Saturday.

The festival's events are rounded off by BBC1's One Show and Watchdog multi award winning Mitch Benn, on Wednesday, April 11.

In this two hour show in the Rondo Theatre, Mitch and his band will be performing a mix of their new songs and old favourites, to combine music and comedy to cater for a diverse audience of all ages.

Tickets can be booked online at www.bathcomedy.com or are also available from fair-trade ticketing company Brown Paper Tickets.

These tickets can be posted at no extra cost, or printed at home. Most tickets are also available online at www.bathboxoffice.org.uk, or in person.

“I hope to catch this online somewhere, the UK is a little too far away for me. I am a stand up comedy aficionado. There is a worldwide contest online at Make A Star (makeastar.com). The setup of Make A Star reminds me of something like American Idol + YouTube. I dont see enough British comics on there despite the competition being open to the UK. There is a new competition every month with cash prizes awarded to winners and voters. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys comedy (they have music competitions too) and especially to performers.”
