This is Bath

It'll start off being more of a winter holiday.

But a group of former Bath students are planning an ambitious tour in a London bus.

But unlike Cliff Richard and his pals in the film Summer Holiday, they will be working as they go - and they're setting off in January.

As more and more graduates find it difficult to get work, the group of ex-University of Bath students have decided to embark on the American trip in order to boost their CVs.

The team of four will head to the USA in January in the red double-decker Routemaster, which will be their home for up to 12 months.

Throughout their expedition, they will be visiting all 48 mainland states, creating a variety of projects which will help people who are disadvantaged.

The work they carry out will be similar to schemes they pursued during their time at university, where they were part of the Students in Free Enterprise project, which consists of 1,000 teams of students all over the world who teach others what they know about business.

Some of the things they did included working with the homeless - helping them to find a house and employment.

While planning their US trip, they have also set each other challenges to boost morale.

Nick Elliott, 24, a business administration graduate, will have to high-five as many people as possible to try to break the ice with people they meet along the way.

Bokani Tshidzu, aged 22, a politics with economics graduate who lives in The Oval, said they were hoping the trip would increase their employability.

She said: "We graduated this year and we wanted to start our own businesses but we have to train ourselves.

"We are all very entrepreneurial people so we wanted to start something unique which we would have to market and get support for ourselves.

"We wanted to have a different experience so when we approach employers we can have this to show."

She said they were hoping to talk to as many people as possible to raise their profile and so they could help large amounts of people.

She said they had drawn their inspiration from author Danny Wallace's book Random Acts of Kindness.

In the book, the writer who grew up in Bath focuses on 365 ways to make the world a nicer place and encourages readers to do more good deeds.

Miss Tshidzu said: "I think the thing that I am most excited about is really understanding the economic approach to business in a different country.

"We want to speak to as many people as possible and we are all very outgoing and have strong personalities.

"It is going to be quite intense as we will be living in the bus but we all get on really well."

She added: "It is going to be a very grown-up experience, planning how to deal with people as well as learning important skills."

The team will be financing their travels by selling advertising space on their bus, which they have remodelled over the last few months to make it a comfortable living space.

They have encouraged the people of Bath to support them by visiting their website at www.routemaster66.com.
