HORSE RACING Bath Racecourse will host another extra meeting on Thursday, September 9.

Racing took place at Lansdown on Bank Holiday Monday after Chepstow Racecourse switched its fixture there following an isolated outbreak of root gall nematodes – microscopic parasitic worms which cause soil instability – at the Welsh venue.

Chepstow's final two flat fixtures, scheduled for tomorrow and next Thursday, have now been moved to Brighton and Bath respectively for the same reason.

British Horseracing Authority inspector of courses Peter Hobbs visited Chepstow on Monday and said the problem was something that he has not seen on a racecourse before.

Monday's meeting saw Malcolm Saunders stay on course to celebrate his most successful season as a trainer when Wooden King landed the digibet.com Handicap.

Liam Jones shot out of the stalls on the five-year-old and won by three quarters of a length from Kinigi, under Andrew Hefferman.

Jake Payne made a welcome return to race riding after being sidelined for two months with a back injury when he took the Lancer Scott Construction Apprentice Handicap on Stamford Blue for Ron Harris.

Apprentice Emmet McNamara rode his first winner since leaving Ireland to join Ralph Beckett's Whitsbury stable, on Ruby Alexander in the Lancer Scott Retail Nursery Handicap.

Happy Today started hot favourite for the Lancer Scott EBF Maiden Stakes but ran wide and Martin Dwyer was all out to regain the advantage in the home straight before beating El Mansour by two and a quarter lengths.

Tadhg O'Shea prevailed by a short head on Masaraat, trained by John Dunlop in the Festival Racing On Course EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

Russ Kennemore made most of the running in the Festival Racing On The Rails Handicap on Mr Money Maker for trainer John Flint, then held on to win by a length from Petonic.
