The council's river champion, councillor Dave Laming (Ind, Lambridge) said he was relieved that the situation at the weir wharf was being resolved, with help from cabinet member for neighbourhoods councillor David Dixon (Lib Dem, Oldfield).

"We have managed to bring to an end a very unsatisfactory state of affairs, which potentially could have proved unsafe for the general public.

"On a number of site visits with councillor Dixon we were both shocked at the irresponsible manner in which mains electric cables had been draped in the trees, then loosely laid along the river bank and in some places actually hanging in the river.

"Even more disturbing was the removal of a long section of safety guard rail.
