This is to give us greater control over the comments system, which in the past has been abused by a small number of people.
Registration is quick and easy, and simply requires filling in an online form and confirming your identity by email.
Your personal information will be kept secret and will not be used for any other purpose unless you allow us to do so.
Dear readers: We're quite big enough to live with people criticising The Bath Chronicle and we don't remove comments critical of the paper.
What we do remove, to the best of our abilities, are posts abusing other posters, potential libels and obscenities. We also take a pretty harsh view of people posting under multiple identities.
As responsible publishers we are now, as "Pete" suggested, putting "sufficient systems in place to protect ourselves" and to block the very few persistent offenders against those simple rules.
Asking readers to register and log in before posting comments will make this job much easier on our new platform, without having to resort to removing entire debates, which has been our only sanction in the past couple of weeks.
