Woodland from recycled waste is on the cards, says MP

City MP Don Foster has urged people to help create new woods by recycling their Christmas cards.

The politician this week visited the WH Smith store in the city centre to back a recycling scheme involving the Woodland Trust.

Cards can be recycled throughout January at WH Smith, Tesco, TK Maxx and Marks & Spencer stores.

Cards collected during the campaign will be taken to paper mills to be recycled into new paper products, with money raised helping the conservation charity plant thousands of trees.

A similar scheme last year saw 73.6 million cards recycled which enabled the trust to plant 17,000 trees in some of its 1,000 UK woods.

Mr Foster said: "It is important everyone recycles their Christmas cards, and by putting them in the Woodland Trust bins, people will be helping to plant extra trees for wildlife and communities across the UK.

"This is an easy way to help make a positive impact on the environment."

Since the scheme was founded 12 years ago more than 600 million cards have been recycled which has enabled the charity to plant 140,000 trees.
