Trinny and Susannah in city visit

Thursday, December 04, 2008, 11:21

Cruel to be kind fashion gurus Trinny and Susannah have been in Bath on the latest leg of their drive to smarten up the country.

The duo have been advising the nation on what not to wear for the past 14 years.

Now countless TV programmes and several books later, they have partly ignored their own rules and are encouraging women to discover their more adventurous side.

The couple were at Bath's Waterstone's store promoting their latest book, Who Do You Want To Be Today?

A guide tells you how to become a "bombshell", "ice queen" or "rock chick" and Susannah describes the book as their "prettiest" so far.

She said: "There are less rules involved, we want people to have the opportunity to be more adventurous and to be their own stylist.

"Sometimes you wake up in the morning and you feel a certain way. This book means you can dress accordingly."

The pair say the book is aimed at a wide audience, from teenage girls who are inspired by their favourite celebrities to older people who feel like a change.

Although some of the looks modelled in the book are slightly extreme, they say the aim is that they can be adapted and toned down to fit in with everyday life.

Neither Trinny or Susannah had been to Bath for years, but say they were struck by how beautiful the city was as they drove in.

Trinny did however have fond memories of the city's shops.

She said: "I know it has a lot of high street shops, but also some lovely boutique shops across the river and lots of vintage shops too.

"And everything is so close together, which is nice!"

As part of their promotions for the new book, women were invited to come along to their book signing with an item of clothing they no longer wear so that Trinny and Susannah could restyle it for them.

Trinny said they often noticed people had made a special effort when they meet them.

She said: "We also get stopped all the time in the street by people needing fashion advice, often men too."

Susannah added: "Probably the most common time is when we are in the changing rooms and people show us what they are wearing and what we think."

When asked what celebrities they would most like to get their hands on, they say they are not interested in styling the rich and famous.

Trinny said: "We much prefer looking at the people who don't have stylists.

"We like working with someone who has lost all their confidence and through dressing we can help them make the most of themselves and feel better from within."

The pair deny claims that they "bully" women.

Susannah said: "We just want women to make the best of themselves. The worst we can get is to be forceful.

"We always know, being women ourselves, how much someone can take.

"But when someone has been so downtrodden for so long, the need a bit of a shake."

They believe that the biggest obstacle to women dressing their best is lack of self-esteem.

Trinny said: "They are scared of being under the spotlight. They don't realise that if they dress better they might welcome the spotlight a bit more."

Who Do You Want To Be Today, published by Weidenfeld and Nicholson, is £20 and out now.
