Strictly stars wow Bath

A show-stopping performance by Strictly Come Dancing favourites Vincent and Flavia marked the end of a weekend of dance in Bath.

The couple were the highlight of the Dancestars Show at the Assembly Rooms today, which was the finale of the city’s second dance festival.

It was also a high point of a weekend of entertainment that included the Sing for Life music festival and the Bath Spring Flower Festival.

The event was sold out and the audience were treated to an afternoon of performances from some of the top dancers in the business.

Styles on show included Irish dancing, belly dancing, ballet and Georgian.

Flavia Cacace said she was impressed with the historic location and the city of Bath in general.

She said: “It is a beautiful city, I love old historic buildings and we have loved dancing here.

“We think it is hugely important for all people to have the opportunity to dance, especially younger people, and that is what is so fantastic about Strictly. It has opened it up for people.

“I believe that anyone can dance, no matter what standard they are.”

Director of the Bath Dance Festival James Whitehead said the entire weekend had been a success.

He said: “It has been fantastic. It was lovely to finish with such a highlight, Vincent and Flavia, it really captured people's imagination."

He said a personal highlight had been a sucessful attempt to break the world record for waltzing yesterday.

"Seeing people of all ages, from young children, up to people in the 90s was just amazing.”

Also performing at the show were world champion Irish dancer Cecily Charlton and her troupe, dancers from Ballet Black, a group set up to highlight the talents of black and Asian dancers, Persian belly dancers Charareh Pouzard and 1001 Nights, and the Bath Minuet Company.

However, most of the audience were waiting for the last act of Vincent and Flavia, who performed five routines, including their acclaimed Argentine Tango.

Amanda Sweet, 48, who lives in Bloomfield, had brought along her mother, friend and my two daughters.

She said: “We are all Strictly Come Dancing fans so we are really here to see them, but everything has been fantastic.

“I used to be a ballet dancer so I especially enjoyed Ballet Black. It was nice to see so many different styles of dance all at the same time, it is a really good idea.”

Her 16-year-old daughter Ellie Hack said she had enjoyed seeing all the dances.

She added: “I wish I could dance like that, but I am rubbish! It has been really good fun though.”

Susie Keys, from Box, was with a group of friends and said they had been lucky to get tickets.

She said: “It has been fantastic, I came along last year too. My only criticism would be that the tickets sold out so quickly and they could have easily sold out another night’s performance too.”
