School in the top ten best in UK

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 13:10

Two schools in Bath have been named among the best in the country.

Bathwick St Mary Primary was ranked ninth in The Sunday Times Parent Power league table of the 500 best state primary schools.

And St Gregory's Catholic College was placed 13th in the list of state secondary schools with no sixth form, based on the number of A* and A grades achieved at GCSE.

The primary school rating is based on the number of 11-year-olds achieving level four in the Key Stage 2 Sats tests over the past three years.

In the last set of summer exams, all the pupils at Bathwick St Mary taking the tests gained at least a level four in English, maths and science.

Headteacher Kevin Burnett said he was very pleased with the children and staff.

He said: "I am extremely proud of the outcomes we have achieved and the way everybody in the school community has worked together. We have a fantastic team here, not only the teachers, staff and pupils working so hard, but they are all supported by the governors and parents."

The school was placed 16th in last year's list but Mr Burnett said each year group included children with different abilities.

He said: "We strive to be consistent and to do the best we possibly can, but you are only as good as each year's cohort of pupils."

The GCSE results for St Gregory's this summer saw 35 per cent of results at either an A* or A grade.

The Odd Down school has improved on a ranking of 28th in 2007, with 28.2 per cent of results marked at the top two grades.

Headteacher Raymond Friel said: "We are absolutely delighted at this further recognition of our fantastic results last summer.

"Our focus is very much on maintaining those high standards and looking to improve our provisions for the future."

Other schools in Bath and North East Somerset which featured in the top 500 for their categories were Beechen Cliff, Ralph Allen, Wellsway, Oldfield, King Edward's, Kingswood, Prior Park, the Royal High, Bathford Primary, the Royal High Junior and the Paragon.
