Rec pressure group tops 3,000 mark
And it has turned to the social networking site Facebook to drive up membership levels.
The Real Friends of The Rec group was launched last year to rally support for Bath Rugby's plans for a new arena at its historic home.
But its founders - rugby fans Peter Downey and Richard Wright - have been frustrated at the pace of growth of the group.
They say they need at least 5,000 members to become a real force to be reckoned with in the city.
With home crowds averaging 10,600 - the current full capacity of the existing ground - it is clear there is the potential for more Bath supporters to sign up.
A Facebook group called Real Friends of The Rec has now been established with around 300 members.
The Real Friends have also added an Email a Friend link to their own website - www.realfriendsoftherec.co.uk.
This allows people to alert their acquaintances to the existence of the pressure group, with the resulting email carrying a link to its subscription page.
Mr Downey, who spearheaded the £1.6 fundraising campaign for what is now the Hamptons Stand in 1996, said they had processed around 500 applications in the last week.
The trustees who look after The Rec have now finalised a blueprint for a possible stadium development which has been sent to the Charity Commission, which since a High Court ruling in 2002 has had a veto over the use of the land.
The commission said this week that it aimed to decide whether to approve that document "early in the New Year".
A spokeswoman said she could not be any more specific than that.
It will then be up to Bath Rugby to decide whether the terms of the new framework - officially known as a scheme - are acceptable.
The trustees and the club are also hoping the commission will agree a two-year extension to Bath Rugby's temporary stand lease so that detailed decisions on development can wait until the credit crunch eases.
Anyone wanting to get in touch with the group can email contact@realfriendsoftherec.co.uk.
