Natural selection holds true for Egyptian event

It'll be a case of laugh like an Egyptian when wacky performers from Bath's Natural Theatre Company travel to Cairo later this month.

The Widcombe-based group has been invited to perform its unique brand of street theatre at the Cairo Book Fair.

The British Council, which flies the flag for British culture abroad, has invited the group to appear at the event, which will attract three million visitors.

It is the second biggest book fair in the world and the four-strong Naturals team will be in the Egyptian capital from January 22 to 24.

The fair will feature some 3,000 exhibitors, as well as appearances by authors, buyers and publishers.

The UK is this year's guest of honour and 10 leading British authors will be giving lectures and carrying out book signings.

The Naturals will be performing in the avenues and piazzas between the pavilions that make up the exhibition site.

The company has performed in Egypt before, at the opening of the British Council's new facility in Cairo, and at the National Library in Alexandria.

Among the characters portrayed by the Naturals will be the Pink Suitcase tourists, the Coneheads, the Flowerpots and the British Bobbies. The team will comprise Ric Jerrom, Mark Bishop, Rose Popay and Haf Morgan.

Meanwhile, another group of entertainers from Widcombe has raised £235 with a New Year's Day performance.

The Widcombe Mummers entertained about 250 people at Widcombe Crescent and the Prior Park Garden Centre with a traditional story of two brave knights battling for supremacy.

The event, supported by the Widcombe Association, raised money for the St Matthew's Church halls.

Organiser Ian Gilchrist said: "This is our fourth year's appearance, and I think it is fantastic the way we just seem to get better and better and the crowds get bigger and bigger.

"I'm sure it has something to do with people wanting a reason to get out of the house on New Year's Day, and we're very happy to provide this.

"Everyone is good-humoured on an occasion like this, and what is wonderful to see is smiles on everyone's faces, whether in the audience or the performers."
