Free course gives young parents a chance to revitalise their lives

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:21

Being a new parent can be daunting at any age.

But if you are a teenage mum or dad, it can be particularly lonely.

A new free course, run by young people support group Connexions for parents-to-be and mums and dads under the age of 20, aims to offer support and advice.

The Valuing Young Parents course is designed to encourage people back into employment or education by building their self-confidence, providing them with an opportunity to discuss childcare issues and helping them develop life skills.

Connexions personal adviser Chaya Bamber said: "Being a young parent can be lonely and difficult at times.

"This course aims to increase understanding and comprehension of parenting issues and to help those young parents wishing to progress in education, employment or training.

"It's only a couple of hours a week, but it can make a big difference.

"And, of course, it's an ideal opportunity to meet other young parents."

The course, which runs for 10 weeks, covers a range of subjects including child safety, food and health, IT skills and money management.

It will enable learners to work towards a level 2 qualification, which is equivalent to one GCSE at grade A to C and could help them move on to further study.

The course, which starts next Tuesday, will run weekly between 1pm and 3pm at the Percy Community Centre in New King Street. Free childcare is available on site.

Anyone interested should contact Chaya Bamber on 01225 473374 or email cbamber@connexionswest. org.uk.
