In the long grass

Laughed? I nearly did when I discovered the Lib Dem excuse for not cutting the grass in public areas was to encourage wild flowers.

Well I have news for our Lib Dem-led council. There are no wild flowers growing on the now unusable Green in Rudmore Park. It has become neglected and now hosts knee high grass.

Kids on the green are becoming a rare sight and dog walkers have taken to walking around the green on the road. Even the resident green woodpecker (which are renowned for feeding on short mowed lawns), has decided to fly off to a different country where the grass is most certainly shorter on the other side.

But there is a bigger picture to all of this. This is just one small way that this Government's cuts are impacting upon our local neighbourhoods. This council has abandoned their responsibility to upkeep public spaces and this just goes to show how little they really care about people's living environments.

“There was an excellent TV programme on a couple of months ago about Birmingham Council's trial of less frequent grass-cutting to encourage wildlife. Of course it also requires appropriate planting but few habitats are more sterile than closely-mown grass.

“I have every sympathy with this letter, but the thought does occur to me - could not some of the local residents get together and cut at least some of it themselves? This might also have the advantage of embarrassing the council.”

“Quite honestly I would like to hear statement from the council setting out the true reasons why we are not getting any grass cutting in public areas - I have heard a number of excuses including the inability to machine cut grass in wet weather... The public grass areas in Weston are a disgrace - earlier this week I watched a man, with a sit-on grass cutter attending to the large grass areas of Newbridge School...although the weather had been very wet, it did not stop this fellow from doing a good job for the school.
If council employees previously employed on grass cutting are no longer performing this work, what are they now engaged upon?? Come on BANES, get the grass cut forthwith!!”
