Warminster Road's ongoing speeding woe

Thursday, December 04, 2008, 09:11

The recent self-congratulatory letter from Cllr Brook Whelan was about the third in as many weeks from the Conservative Party but I am pleased to hear that at least something is being done somewhere about speeding and road safety.

However, I am a long way from being convinced that there is any coordinated road safety policy covering the city as a whole.

As he says, there are problems in achieving improvements – but isn't this the essence of what the council are elected for (and paid to do)?

In my ward, local politicians (of all colours) seem to be blind to the problems.

In Warminster Road, Government figures indicate that in excess of 82 per cent of drivers have exceeded the 30mph limit over the last three years.

Moreover, vehicles travelling at more than 45mph in this 30mph limit zone constitute 5.3 per cent of the total traffic.

This equates to 200,000 vehicles a year travelling on this road at over 45mph!

Cllr Whelan's claims about his party's work reflects a shallow understanding of traffic problems in the city, or do I take it that his claim that 'Conservatives and B&NES take the issue very seriously' is exclusive to Widcombe?
