A Bath pub is to shed the name it has had for more than a decade as it undergoes a £100,000 facelift.

The Rat & Parrot in Westgate Street is reverting to its original name – although it will be called the West Gate, rather than the Westgate.

The pub will close on Monday for around two and a half weeks for what will be its first revamp in 12 years.

Its owner TCG bought the venue from Spirit Group in 2006.

TCG operations director Nigel Wright said the time had come for the venue to move forward while retaining the atmosphere of a traditional pub.

Mr Wright said the refurbishment work over the next fortnight would cost more than £100,000 and involve installation of new furniture, carpets and light fittings as well as improvements to the kitchens and the introduction of new cooking equipment.

TCG will also create about 20 new jobs to add to the existing team of 12.

Mr Wright said: "We will be giving it a bit of a sparkle.

"It will be a traditional pub with a twist.

"We are trying to create plenty of nooks and crannies where everyone will be able to find their own space.

"The success of the business will be down to the management and the staff. The furnishings will be much more comfortable and the environment will be more friendly as it is very dark in there at the moment."

The pub will reopen on Tuesday, September 15.

It will continue to be managed by David Haywood, who has run the business for the last seven years.

The West Gate, one of 138 pubs owned by TCG nationwide, will be able to seat 226 people on two floors.

Mr Wright said: "The Rat & Parrot brand was a fashion of the late 1990s. It has had its day.

"We need to move back to a more traditional style of pub, go back to basics and deliver what our customers require."
