Staff have appealed for information after four animals were stolen from Bath Cats and Dogs Home last night.

Flora, a young lurcher, Harry, a wire-coated lurcher cross collie, Prince, an 11-month-old Saluki, and Bassett, a two-year-old Patterdale cross, have all disappeared.

Animal care manager at the home Jackie Dalton said she was hopeful that a member of the public would be able to come forward with information for their safe return.

She said: “The police have been informed and we hope by publicising this we will get them returned as soon as possible.

“In the past when we have had dogs stolen thanks to all the publicity given to it by the local media they were safely recovered and the thief prosecuted.”

It is thought the thieves climbed over the fence near the football field and kicked down the doors to the kennels to steal the animals.

Their disappearance was only discovered when staff arrived at the home around 5.30am, so it is not clear exactly what time the thefts happened.

The missing animals are described as “nervous” and workers at the home are keen to see them returned safe and well.

The Claverton Down animal care centre looks after and rehomes around 25,000 unwanted pets every year, making it one of the largest of its kind in the UK.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bath police on 0845 4567000, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

“I suspect it could be a case of dimwits trying to be hard men having fighting dogs and breaking in.

These are nearly always the sort that talk tough act hard but are not hard enough to fight on their own and need a dog to fight their battles for them.

Are they hard enough to go in the army? No not on your Nelly, of course they would be crying and shaking too much and the army wouldn't take them anyway.

I imagine you'd see these fairies tattooed up etc but really about as hard as a couple of gay trainee ballet dancers. Actually the gay ballet dancers would be harder!”

“Like I said I suspected I was being nieve.

I'm not a "dog person" so have never really taken an interest in dogs either as pets or objects of abuse

If the animals were taken to be abused then I agree with the "scum" verdict.”

“Rob, I agree with KLB you are very naive if you really want a dog would you go out in the middle of the night and kick doors in to get at the animals? I think not. There are many reasons why people would do these kind of things , to use them for hunting, selling them to make money, as KLB says dog fights. I really dont think these kind of scum wld break in so they could take the dog home to give it lots of love and attention . If you want an animal you would do it the legal way! I guess maybe you think children are abducted because people cant have kids , yes sometimes that the case but most times its not . Theres alot of sick people in this world!!!”

    “Hi there JMC,
I too take the dogs out whenever I have time. I also work voluntary for housing assoc' hospices and Brit Legion.
But there are a lot of people who sit around at home wondering what to do during the winter perhaps we could persuade them to get out of the chair and start moving.
Just watched news about battersea dogs home over 2k dogs put down last year..so sad.”

“Rob, I am afraid you are being Naive. Dogs are stolen for all sorts of reasons but rarely for the right reasons. Very often dogs are stolen and then used as bait dogs by undercover fighting rings to teach their dogs to fight and kill - Sorry, not nice, but very sadly it's the way of the world today”

“I am sure that I am being ignorant here, so please correct me but...

What is *so* terrible about animals being stolen. I assume that we have a situation where animals without a home are stolen by someone who wants to have them as a pet. What is so bad about that? Or am I being hopelessly nieve?”

“In response to Andy Cappell MSN, I have supported the home for many years as a volunteer. Unfortunately I do not have the money but willingly give my time (have you I wonder?) and seeing the lack of security firsthand caused me enough concern to come up with a suggestion that it could be vastly improved - raise funds for the materials to make the fences higher and the manpower is already on offer from supporters of an excellent facility for homeless animals. Many of the staff work there because of their love for animals but are only paid the minimum wage so many more volunteers are needed so step forward Andy and do something as your help would be so much appreciated.”

“Its all very well saying put in new security, but who is going to pay for this. The animal care centre is run on a tight budget. If of course there are people who would willing give up their nights sleep to be volunteer security or if D or JMC will put their hand in their pocket and pay for new security devices then all will be well in the future in the mean time don't offer suggestions unless you can back them up with support.”

“I continue to be shocked how many dogs are stolen. This concerns me terribly. I must concur with JMC regarding their security. I volunteered for a private humane society in the USA and we had motion detectors and alarms on the doors and all windows. I don't understand if there have been previous break-ins why the security isn't better. According to their website they have over 350 animals. There seems to be a bit of a lack in responsibility here. It would be different if this was the first time this has happened, but it isn't. How many break-ins have they had? Sorry, I think some re-evaluation is definitely in order. I just hope the dogs are ok. Although not really sure if they should come back to this facility. Think maybe they should be put at another facility if they are found and returned. I realize everyone feels horrible about the four dogs being missing but someone has to be responsible for this, and not just the idiots who took the dogs.”
