“Jollyfun, not having been anywhere near Julian Road recently, I haven't seen this myself. (Can you give a URL to a photo of it? Do you have a picture of the green surface than you can upload?)

But I have to say it sounds like an extraordinary carry-on. I wonder what the thinking behind the green surface was?

Was this a case of wealthy residents of the Royal Crescent glancing out their back windows and not approving the sight of grey tarmac, and deciding that green would look much nicer, but then, after having had the green surface laid, deciding it looked too artificial and reverting to ordinary tarmac?

Whatever the explanation is, it certainly sounds as if some sort of folly has been involved.

It's always good to get to the bottom of things like this and unearth the reasons for such considerable and expensive efforts. Who paid for it is a very reasonable question to ask and require an answer for. Good for you for posting.”

“A few years ago, the traffic department dcided that it would be a good idea to have the road surface of Green St coloured green (supposedly to indicate a shopping area). Since then, I have heard several people ask if we could have Broad St a bit broader, Quiet St a bit quieter, High St a bit higher; and as for Gay St and Queen Sq.........”

“As I recall, the bizarre former surfacing and removal of yellow lines of Julian Road was the idea of the St. James Square Residents Association. Apparently it was intended to be a replication of road conditions in Holland. It was claimed it would reduce speeds and facilitate safe crossing of the road.

Bath is not Holland; the green surface and the bumps failed to achieve the alleged objects. Good riddance, frankly. I can now cross the road at St. James' Street and Burlington Street totally safely on the pedestrian crossings, which, luckily, have the traditional orange beacons and not traffic lights.

Having said that, the junction of Marlborough Buildings and Crescent Lane is still a nightmare for both motorists and pedestrians. Until the derelict garage there is redeveloped, however, I foresee further inaction by BaNES. Let's hope they do not impose more traffic lights on us; we have too many already all over the City.”

“Zoom in on the red (A),

    drag the yellow figure,
(by the + & - zoom facility on left) .. into the road at Cresent lane / Julian road junction ...
    all is then revealed.”
