“I must admit I find the word quite useful these days. Seems increasingly appropriate in reference to most things.
My gripe is the way the Chron censors the Greek work for 'same' (as in ****nym, homosexual, ****genous); which, unfortunately happens to be the same as Latin for 'man' (as in **** sapiens). Why not the opposite prefix - hetero?”

“The R makes it sound much more sweary. My theory is that's because well-mannered posh people can't pronounce it. 'Ass' has become the socially acceptable home-counties version of the far more uncouth *R**, which is associated with the kind of thick, working class regional accents which still include the correct pronunciation of the letter 'R'.”

“No Moe, you're perfectly right to be alarmed by this. The same can also be said for ****erectus. We have thus far identified various ways in which the "swearing" censorship has not only caught our species in its tangled web, but also the greek nation and an entire class of people. To eradicate both humans and regional, working class dialects from the forum via this attack on our freedom of speech is exactly what I've come to expect from Northcliffe.
The whole thing is completely unacceptable and quite simply ********!”

“Thanks for clearing that up deniro, so all manner of ******** are banned however spelt!
It's a travesty that we are expected to communicate with *'s. The double guessing and misunderstandings that could be a result of this are to the detriment of serious debate in Bath and nationwide.”

“Language may refer either to the specifically human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication, or to a specific instance of such a system of complex communication. The scientific study of language in any of its senses is called linguistics. Approximately 3000–6000 languages are spoken by humans today. When used as a general concept, "language" refers to the cognitive faculty that enables humans to learn and use systems of complex communication. Language is thought to have originated when early hominids first started cooperating, adapting earlier systems of communication based on expressive signs. The use of language has become deeply entrenched in human culture and, apart from being used to communicate and share information, it also has social and cultural uses.
I could go on for ages, but.................
I have to ask this therefore:
Why do we get censored?
Swearing doesn't hurt or harm and if people are completely honest almost every one of us swear at some point every day! Plus, we are/mostly all intelligent adults!”

“Deniro- "Plus, we are/mostly all intelligent adults", very much so in some cases. To be treated like wayward school pups by Northcliffe is more than a bit patronising.
Only today a poster has had "u***jective" censored mid word due to the placement of the knob without a 'K'.
I'd like to remind them that we wouldn't have paid any attention to the knob without a 'K' had not someone snorting deliriously in Northcliffe towers spent entire days identifying double entendres and slightly rude words to banish.”

“My daughters great ancestor was listed as being as "a ******* of the parish", upon research I discovered she is distantly related to the Rees Moggs (through marriage only thankfully). I wonder if I'm allowed to use this official though outdated term on this forum?
Apologies if not of course.”

“Ah well, interesting point Mr Cupis and clearly demonstrated by the forum not censoring "ovaries". Ovaries are a hidden and rarely seen wonder. I assume this resulted in them not being subject to much mirth and comparisons in ye olden dayes as B'lox. But as you raise the issue, I wonder why slang for male genitalia is deemed much less offensive than the slang for external female genitalia which scores high indeed on the swearometer (and rightly so)!.
Therein lies the the perplexing "sexism" question with relation to swearing.”

“This is a travesty 1946, human body parts and references to these are vetoed by the forum. It will make future stories on scientific tests carried out during alien abduction almost impossible to publish....... Aha, this would explain why there are no reports of the occurence on here!”
“An argument in support of the use of "B'locks"
Is B'locks a swearword?
I thought we established upon the release of The Sex Pistols Album "Never Mind The ********, here's the Sex Pistols" in '77 that "********" was an acceptable slang term. Infact, during the inevitable trial of the "********" usage on the album cover, the "defending Queen's Counsel John Mortimer produced expert witnesses who were able to successfully demonstrate that the word "********" was not obscene, and was actually a legitimate Old English term originally used to refer to a priest, and which, in the context of the title, meant "nonsense".
Of course this lead to shopkeepers, the record label and McLaren being found Not Guilty of all four charges levelled against them in relation to "outraging public decency", "obscene publications" etc etc. So why after this liberation of this woefully underused word, are we still using phrases such as "that's a load of old nonsense" when "********" would more than suffice on this forum? A succinct and apt word with which to cover a wide range of statements we disagree with.
What do you think? Should we make a case for "********" to be released from forum censorship? Should the media themselves make more use of the word in newspaper and television articles?”
