Police hunting a driver who sped off after being involved in a fatal crash in which a teenage girl died are searching out every single driver of a particular type of car.

Dorset police are calling on every owner of a Volvo XC90 right across the West after the tragedy on the A31 at Ashley Heath, just north of Bournemouth, last month.

Sixteen-year-old Jade Clark was riding a scooter on the A31 at around 8.23pm on Sunday, February 24, when she was hit by a Volvo XC90 and killed. The car failed to stop and now a massive police hunt for the car and its driver has begun.

So far, more than 300 of the cars across six counties have been eliminated from inquiries, but police chiefs determined to find the driver.

“If you own or use a Volvo XC90, we will be coming to visit you,” said Detective Inspector Marcus Hester. “I’m directly appealing for the person who failed to stop to come forward and help me with the investigation into the tragic death of 16-year-old Jade Clark.”

The Volvo is a light colour and was registered between 2003 and 2007.

“If you know anything about where this car is or who may have been driving it, please call us,” added Detective Inspector Hester.

“Do you know a neighbour, friend or colleague who uses an XC90? Has it suddenly disappeared? Or have you noticed a change in someone who drives an XC90? Have they become stressed or been off work? I believe the vehicle would have suffered front-end damage during the collision. Do you work in a body repair shop and have you been approached to repair this vehicle? Or maybe you work in a vehicle spares or car breaker yard and have received an inquiry for parts to repair a damaged XC90? If so please come forward.”

Local nursing home Churchill Retirement Living is offering a reward of £4,000 and Crimestoppers is offering an additional £1,000 reward, both for information leading to the arrest and charge of an offender.

“I welcome the apparent determination shown by the police on this occasion. It is rather unusual, normally they don't seem to care very much when a vulnerable road user is killed or seriously injured.”

“Piece of filth & considering the type of car most likely to be a woman & middle-class.

I say this as 95% of XC90's are regitered to women & they are rather expensive, even 2nd hand.

I couldn't care less who thinks this is narrow minded etc...Take a look at Chris Huhne & his 'Respectable' Wife, who I see as the TYPICAL Bath 'Type'.

I hope the person suffers when caught along with the dog dirt that may have protected them”
