The heavy rain meant that there was water in a disused canal at Combe Hay for the first time in 12 years.

Lock 15 of the Somersetshire Coal Canal was last "in water" in 2000.

During the 100-year lifetime of the canal, the lock flight at Combe Hay carried up to 22 boatloads of coal each day from the coalfields of the Cam Valley to join the Kennet and Avon Canal at Dundas at Monkton Combe.

The lock flight was drained after being formally abandoned in 1904, but it occasionally refills after very heavy rain.

“Yes, Pompeybelle, you are right. I am a walker as well as a cyclist. I often walk my old haunts around the Limpley Stoke area, and I certainly appreciate the solitude there.”

“The old towpath there is likely to remain just that. But if only the village at the top of the thirst-provoking hill had a pub, it's an ideal situation for one.”

“As someone who is a walker and not a cyclist, can I say that the last thing I want to see is this made into a cycle path. I'm pleased there are cycle paths and I've been a supporter of the Two Tunnels path - but the fact is, most are not terribly walker friendly - especially when they are tarmac paths. That's not a criticism of cyclists - it's a simple statement of the inevitable. Please - leave us walkers a few wild and woolly footpaths to amble along.”

“I have often walked along there, but I agree more could be made of it to facilitate a proper cycle route.”

“What a waste of a great asset.
It should be cleared and made into a cyclepath and nature walk”

“Gosh, any more rain and perhaps the canal could be used for it's original purpose.”
