Six of the best as Team Bath conquer Midlands
Team Bath athletes rose magnificently to the occasion with a hatful of medals at the Midland Indoor Championships in Birmingham.
Leading the way were six of the very best as Loren Bleaken, Alex Stainthorpe, Abi Davies, Hannah Grubb, Livia Gauntlett and Nicco Hunt all won gold medals.
The latter pair are members of Team Bath's highly talented pole vaulting group, with Grubb adding 7cm to last year's best as she won the under-20s title with a 3.67m clearance.
"It was a tremendous performance by Hannah and she has worked hard for this victory," said coach Tim Snowdon.
He also works with Hunt, who turns 14 tomorrow and enjoyed an early birthday present when he cleared 3.10m to win the under-15 boys' title.
Gauntlett, who is coached by Colin Baross, won the under-15 girls' 60m hurdles crown in 9.34secs. Her time of 9.29 in the heats was a new personal best and ranks her third in the UK in her age group.
Also going quicker than before was 16-year-old Davies, coached by Nick Brown, who won under-20 women's 60m gold in 7.87. That shaved 0.07 off the PB set just a week earlier when she won the Welsh Championships.
Bleaken enjoyed yet another terrific weekend in a winter where she has hardly put a foot wrong, finishing runner- up in the senior women's 800m on Saturday before winning the 400m the following day.
The latter result was particularly impressive for the 16-year-old from Marshfield, who competed at senior level as under-17s are not permitted to run 400m. Her winning time of 55.81 was a personal best and would have put her second in the UK under-20 rankings.
Bleaken is number one in the country at under-17 level over 800m, her time of 2mins 8.08secs from last weekend being seven seconds quicker than her nearest challenger.
Training partner Stainthorpe looked full of running as she won the senior women's 3,000m in 10:06.16, slicing a stunning 21 seconds off her personal best.
Alex Carter went eight seconds faster than ever before as he marked his move up to senior competition with a superb 3,000m silver in a time of 8:45.98.
Bronze medals went to 19-year-old Natasha Lewis, in the senior women's long jump, and 17-year-old Elise Gauntlett, who set a new PB of 3.12m in the under-20 women's pole vault.
Royal High student Laura Smith finished fourth in the under-20 women's 400m in 1:01.46, having clocked a personal best of 59.72 in the heats.
Afeni Payne-Bonnick came fifth in the under-15 girls' 60m and Anna Alexander-Holmes was seventh in the under-20 women's long jump.
Jamie Courtenay won the senior shot and was runner-up in the pole vault, while fellow University of Bath student Charlotte Addis was third in the senior high jump.
Paralympian Ben Rushgrove had a couple of run-outs in his build-up to London 2012, clocking 8.2 in the senior men's 60m heats and 26.91 over 200m.
