Leaders meet Games chief

City business leaders have met the man in charge of the multi-billion pound budget for the buildings that will be home to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, had been invited to Bath by city MP Don Foster.

Mr Foster heads Team West of England – a group set up to ensure the area makes the most of the opportunities generated by the Games coming to Britain.

Over dinner in the Bath Spa Hotel, Mr Armitt updated representatives of the Initiative for B&NES, Bath Chamber of Commerce and GWE Business West on progress.

He said he hoped that many companies in the area would compete to win some of the thousands of contracts that would become available.

"We want to maximise the opportunities for businesses all over the country to become engaged in the process."

People need to register on the website www.CompeteFor.com and they will be alerted when a suitable contract is coming up.

Mr Armitt said: "It is true the bulk of the contracts at the moment are focused on construction, but many call for related services."

So far only about 30 contracts have been awarded to companies in the South West, but Mr Foster is confident the number will rise.
