X Factor runner-up Jahmene Douglas has signed a record deal with Sony and been picked as the voice for Asda's online Christmas advert.

The 22-year-old singer, who grew up in Peasedown St John, came second in the ITV show, and is the latest act to have been snapped up by the record label.

He is following in the footsteps of Ella Henderson and boyband Union J, who were both given deals.

After the news was announced he tweeted: "Eeek .. My excitement always takes time to kick in :-p but I think it's slowly slipping in just what's in store for me."

This marked the start of a busy time for the former Writhlington School pupil, who was also chosen to sing Silent Night for the online version of Asda's Christmas advert. Before the X Factor, Jahmene worked at Asda in Swindon, where he now lives, so was delighted to be in the advert.

He said: "I feel so blessed by the whole X Factor experience and it is so exciting that I am recording for Asda.

"In May I was working out how to make my way up the ladder in Asda but I took a risk and it paid off, and I am just taking it all step by step.

"The support I had from Asda colleagues and shoppers nationwide during the X Factor was overwhelming, and I don't think they realise just how much this meant to me.

"Recording Silent Night for an online version of Asda's Christmas advert is my way of saying thank you to everyone who voted for me, so I hope people like it."

Jahmene impressed judges with a number of performances including John Lennon's Imagine, and I Say A Little Prayer.
