Judd Trump’s bid to reach the televised stages of this year’s World Snooker Championship was ended by delighted ‘local rival’ Stephen Lee.

The Keynsham youngster, who played at the Crucible two years ago, failed to build on a magnificent start in the final qualifying round clash at the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield and was beaten 10-8 by his opponent from Trowbridge.

Trump knocked in breaks of 66, 137, 76, 63, 52 and 61 on his way to a 6-2 lead but failed to repeat the trick in the second session as Lee, the winner of four ranking events, got back to 7-7 with a top run of 70.

The next two frames were shared, then Lee made a 63 break to go 9-8 ahead and came from 61-3 down to win the 18th frame with a superb 59 clearance.

"I just tried to keep close to him and hoped he would start missing," said 34-year-old Lee.

"I was more in the zone than I have been in the last couple of seasons and this makes all the practice worthwhile."

And Lee could not mask his pleasure at beating rising star Trump.

He added: "There's local rivalry there. He fluked a few balls and didn't put his hand up - I don't know why as it's only a game. The boy is good but I'm glad I beat him.

"He was under it at the end and I couldn't see that happening early on. He hits the ball beautifully, there's no denying that. But all I've heard about for the last five years is how good he is.

“Today's he blew a 6-3 lead and hopefully that will stick with him. We've all had our war wounds."
