Ben Withey scored the decisive try as Stothert & Pitt closed the gap on the Somerset Premier’s top four with a 25-21 home victory over Minehead Barbarians.

Both sides played their part in an open and entertaining affair and Stotherts were the first to score when Sheldon Hibberd capitalised after Minehead lost possession in defence.

Minehead responded when a forward drive was touched down by Joe Barrett for Dom Westcott to add the extras. The visitors then stepped up a gear and their tactic of two or three forward drives before releasing their backs paid dividends when Westcott ghosted through to score and convert.

Stotherts hit back when Lewis Whyte first dropped a goal and then deftly chipped through for Dan Smith to gather and score to give them a 15-14 interval lead.

Minehead started the second period well and the impressive Westcott repeated his earlier feat to add seven more points to his tally before a strong passage of play from Stotherts’ forwards resulted in a try for Dan Burcombe.

Withey then went over in the corner to regain the lead and bank a bonus point for Stotherts and it proved decisive as good defence from both sides prevented any further scores in the final ten minutes.

Stothert & Pitt 2nds defeated an Oldfield 3rds/veterans side 31-12 in a good-spirited friendly.

Luke Short touched down twice for Stotherts and Paul Thurston, Sam Cox and Jason Hunt added the other tries, with Kai Emmett converting three of them.
