Waitrose cafe
I completely agree with Stephen Marks, August 30 and Leila Ward September 20 Chronicle, regarding the Waitrose cafe. I went in just to check it out, and nothing about it tempted me to stay. The noise from the refrigerated display cabinet alone was enough to put me off.
We have lost so much and once it's gone it's gone. I feel very sad about all the changes that have been made and was particularly sorry to read that Bath Photo Optics has had to close just one year after being evicted from the Podium shopping centre.
How sad that Waitrose had to trample on so many people, evicting small businesses, restaurants and cafes in order to expand.
As Leila Ward says "who at Waitrose or the council thought any of this would be a good idea"?

“The problem is not so much the shops or cafes: there are plenty of vacant units in the city. Having added so many shops in Southgate we can hardly worry about losing half-a-dozen at the Podium.
Far, far more significant is the tragically wasted opportunity. Once again, Bath turns its back on the River. Once again, there is the opportunity to do something better - and we blow it.
It was only a few months ago that there a discussion about how to make more of the river.
And here we are, with a new development, with new building work - and what happens?
Somewhere that used to have a river view loses it.
Something that could have featured the river, but didn't.
The council could have worked with Waitrose to take advantage of all the building work to improve the (rather nasty, rather scary) footpath.
Why does this city hate its river quite so much?”

“I'll second that. Unfortunately they no longer stock Percol coffee.”

“I went to Morrisons on Saturday. I really enjoyed it. Their bread is definitely the best in town. Fish is great and they have so many staff all over the place.
Magic our Morris! (Who's saying was that?)”

“So why not pretend it did close and just stay away?”

“Waitrose is an absolute mess!!!! I realise that they are trying to 'expand' into the increased space available but why on earth attempt to carry out such major works whilst STILL open for business?? The place has been a nightmare for weeks as customers attempt to search for products - the place should have had a period of closure and opened only when most of the major works had been carried out. Yet another example of supermarket greed.....and to h*** with the customer!”
