The University of Bath has been ranked as the third best in the country in a new independent guide.

The ranking in the Sunday Times University Guide is its highest-ever, meaning that only Oxford and Cambridge now sit above it in the table of 122 UK universities and colleges.

The pat on the back for the Claverton Down campus follows its naming as University of the Year in the paper’s guide last year.

This year’s guide, published with the Sunday Times this weekend, also ranks universities’ performance in individual subjects.

Bath comes top in architecture, mechanical engineering and business studies.

Vice-chancellor Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Bath. We have enjoyed being University of the Year for the past 12 months but in many ways this surpasses that honour.

“To be ranked third in the UK confirms the research and teaching excellence that takes place here, and clearly demonstrates the high quality, distinctive student experience we offer.

“To do this before we have even reached our 50th anniversary is no mean feat.

“I am immensely proud of the dedication and enthusiasm of our staff and students. We are committed to excellence in all that we do and as a result continue to attract academic high-flyers from across the UK and internationally.”

The overall table is compiled using a number of criteria including student satisfaction, research quality, academic peer review, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, dropout rates and graduate employment levels.

Almost nine out of ten (89.3 per cent) of University of Bath students get graduate-level jobs and it has an unemployment rate of just 6.2 per cent.

Earlier this week, the National Student Survey ranked Bath’s students as being amongst the most satisfied in the UK.

Bath Spa University was put in 83rd place by the Sunday Times.

“Well if they are so good they could have fielded a better team than on tonight's University Challenge where they put up an abysmal show and only won because Liverpool were awful too. With a score of 125 they were way off the average score of Oxford and Cambridge teams!”

In what World, is Oldfield Park "hardly handy for the centre of town"? I take your point about the distance from both universitys but town is about 10 minutes walk away.”

“..."Interesting that I am always told you cant compare bath with anywhere else when public transport is mentioned."

Rightly so. Just as it's equally meaningless and idiotic to compare public transport to higher education surveys.”

“Well done Bath, I'm sure it is well deserved.

However it's not really comparing like with like since Bath doesn't have a medical school, and you can't study mainstream and very popular subjects such as History and English at Bath as far as I know. Therefore although Bath is no doubt excellent, it is rather difficult to compare it, for example, with the big civic universities such as Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester. One other thing that has always made me wonder about Bath is what the students feel about being turfed off the campus at the end of the first year and having to live in Oldfield Park (essentially), which is hardly handy for either the campus or the centre of town.”
