The third annual petanque challenge held by City of Bath Petanque League and sponsored by The Raven, Queen Street, was held in Queen's Square.

Thirty one teams of three competed in games of boules on the recently refreshed pistes.

Many of the teams are part of the regular Tuesday evening league tournament.

In a friendly competition, the morning session consisted of three games each with the top 16 teams going on to compete for the main prize of a dinner for three at Tilley's Bistro and the lower 15 going for the plate.

The main competition was won by The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and the plate by The Cool Boulers – Martin, Alice and George Eddis.

The event is organised by The City of Bath Petanque Club to raise money to build new pistes in and around Bath.

The first two years culminated in a new piste at Alexandra Park, which is open to all.

The Raven sponsored the event and further prizes were donated by Tilley's Bistro and The Salamander. The Harington Club provided the Ploughman's lunch.

Jill Forsey, landlady of The Raven, said: "We are very happy to be part of this event which is great fun and will benefit the community in Bath by adding another piste, helping more people to play."

Don Grimes, chairman of City of Bath Petanque Club, added: "We have had great support from both the public and business sector in raising the awareness of petanque.

"The club is increasing in size and, with fundraising events like this, we will be able to provide more facilities for everyone to enjoy."
