Twerton post office closure shock
The post office in Twerton High Street closed suddenly over the weekend.
Now local politicians are keen to ensure that the facility is not lost.
-

The post office was housed in the Nisa store, which is still open but up for sale.
The post office counter was closed on Saturday morning.
A Post Office Ltd spokesman said: "Unfortunately Twerton Post Office branch has closed temporarily and we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused by the unavoidable break in service.
"We are working hard to find a solution that will reinstate Post Office services as quickly as possible."
Local councillor Tim Ball (Lib Dem, Twerton) said he was doing all he could to get a speedy resolution to the issue.
A number of offices have closed in the city in recent years, including the one ot South Twerton.
Cllr Ball said: "Our fear is that it won't get replaced."
The concern comes as Royal Mail is facing a pension deficit of £7bn.
A report to Business Secretary Lord Mandelson later this week will say the organisation needs to bring in sweeping efficiencies.

“The post office used to be located at the corner of Jews Lane and Lower Bristol Road. It was not the only post office that was moved into a shop. Now the crunch is biting many more shops with post offices located inside them will close down. This is because the government refused to support the post office in its own building. Now we pay the piper as the recession does the government's dirty work of closing down the post office system.”

“This sounds like 'closure by stealth' as practised on the PO in the Clifton Triangle, Bristol. This turned from a freestanding PO branch into a counter at the back of a nearby supermarket; of course the public was assured that its future was not in danger. After a couple of years the supermarket shut, and the counter continued to operate from the back of an otherwise closed shop, with a predictably high turnover of staff. A few weeks ago the counter suddenly shut altogether, because the shop lease is up for sale and 'it isn't clear whether the new owner would be able to run the PO counter'. This method of closure avoids the statutory procedure where the public have a chance to object to a proposed closure, and also allows the Post Office to shift the blame for losing the branch to the supermarket.”

“I lived in Twerton up until June of this year and relied on the Post Office in Nisa to withdraw cash from when I needed to. There is a cash machine in Nisa which charges but in the 12 months I lived in Twerton it was always out of order. So the P.O., when it was open, was very useful. I think the nearest free cash point - THAT WORKS - is now on Moorland Road!
If the Nisa store also closes then the people of Twerton will be totally cut off unless they don't have a car or don't mind walking to Moorland Road. (Bus is out of the equation!)
This is a disgrace! At least make sure the cash point in Nisa that you have to pay for is working (is it 75p or £1.00 to withdraw cash from it? - Never found out because it never worked!!!)”

“Well said Katie,
My parents who are in their 80's would have to walk up a hill if they used the bus, the council stopped the tokens which could have been used on taxi's for door to door service. The elderly should have easy access to a post office for pensions etc.
It's bad enough that the Nisa store doesn't seem to have much food in it any more to spend their pension on.
Whatever next !!!”

“i agree that the post office shouldn't shut but whats wrong with the elderly using their free bus pass and going to wedgewood road? it's those who have to pay to bus to alternative post offices that people should be concerned about.”
