Marcus Trescothick revealed his side's best performance of the Friends Provident t20 so far will be rewarded by a training session with Bobby Gould.

Somerset crushed Middlesex by 79 runs at Taunton, with Trescothick weighing in with 83 runs. And, after two days off, Somerset will ease back into training on Wednesday with the help of the former Bristol City striker and Bristol Rovers and Wimbledon manager.

Gould, father of Somerset chief executive Richard Gould, is a regular visitor to Taunton and recently returned after commentating on the World Cup. Somerset are back on course for a quarter-final place after hitting their highest total this year – 204-5 – after being asked to bat.

Trescothick said: "That is probably our best performance in the competition. To get a good total on the board and bounce back after last Friday's defeat to Surrey was vital.

"We talked a bit about not getting too down about it and we bounced back in every aspect of our game. I got a bit of luck and it is always nice to get a few out of the middle and off to a good start.

"I just tried to hit every ball hard and make use of the short boundaries and today it came off. My job is to set things up at the top of the order, and it is a balance with getting away to a good start but also getting a good score.

"We looked set for 230 at one stage but they pegged us back. We had lost a couple of wickets and we could have tumbled away to 180, but we managed to get 204, and chasing that is always hard work on any ground."

Trescothick lauded his bowlers for skittling Middlesex for 125. Murali Kartik claimed three wickets against his former club, while Mark Turner and Kieron Pollard got two apiece. "The way our bowlers bowled was outstanding," said the skipper. "It was definitely their best performance – we kept taking wickets.

"I am not surprised Murali was fired up. There is always going to be needle when you have played for a club for so long. That is the character of the man – he likes to be fiery.

"Mark Turner was brilliant. He was aggressive and that yorker he bowled (to dismiss Neil Dexter) was spot on.

"We have got a couple of days off now and we are meeting up on Wednesday to have a training session with Bobby Gould. He is going to bring the footballs along and give a few lessons to a few people!"

Somerset are next in action on Friday, when Hampshire Hawks are the latest visitors to Taunton.
