Transport and space needed by foodbank
A new foodbank is looking for help to support people in need of food during financial hardship.
The Somer Valley Foodbank was mooted at a meeting last month attended by almost 40 people from community groups, councils and churches.

Now organisers are looking for help with warehouse space and transporting goods.
Among the supporters is the Rev Matthew Street, leader of the St J's Group of Anglican churches in Peasedown St John, Wellow, Shoscombe and Foxcote.

He said: "If anyone has spare warehouse capacity that they would be prepared to donate to the Foodbank on an ongoing basis we would love to hear from them."
Professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, the Citizens Advice Bureau and police identify people in crisis and issue them with a Foodbank voucher.
This voucher can be taken to a distribution centre where the food has been collected through donations, or from volunteer supermarket collections.
The service, which will operate in north east Somerset alongside an existing venture in Bath, will be launched in January.
If anyone can help with warehousing or the use of a van, they should contact Joy Fraser on 01761 433644.

“If you are on Facebook the Bath Foodbank page on there is often a good way to keep up with any current needs - sometimes they get particular items that they run short of to make up the packs - for a time they were struggling to get mashed potato. NB I'm sure there will be those thinking that might be a good thing, but whilst certain things on the list are undoubtedly not to everyone's taste it is a challenge to find things which can be stored until distributed bearing in mind they tend to get big inputs from collections rather than a regular drip feed. When people go to receive their food, volunteers will try to work with them to ensure they have things they will eat and don't have things they don't - within the boundaries of their stocks of course. They will also take account of what cooking facilities the person has - powdered mashed potato that can be made with just a kettle might be a godsend to someone without much in the way of a kitchen whereas that person might struggle to use other items.”

“llovespaniels, it started about a year ago as a collaboration between the Genesis Trust and the too frequently forgotten Salvation Army with considerable support from the major supermarkets. Drop off point is at the Baptist Church Cafe in Manvers Street and it was at St.Michael's Without in Broad Street.
Information at http://tinyurl.com/9z3ogvg or for volunteers email info@bath.foodbank.org.uk”

“I take your point Roger, but with more than 650 users of the Bath foodbank in June i am really concerned that increasing food and energy costs coupled with a harsh winter will generate a crisis, which will affect children and elderly people.
Just as stocks of grit are built up in anticipation of snow, i would like to see a proactive Council perhaps in conjunction with, or giving financial support to voluntary organisations, making plans now for the provision of emergency shelters and hot meals for those in critical need.
Please tell me that something is being done; this problem is still with us.”

“It's not the council that's the problem.”

“Roger, i think it is more than shame on us, we have a Council that could be switching its emphasis from sponsoring headline commercial developments to assisting the deprived, many of whom should have been identified by Social Services.”

“Agree rogerh3 we were having coffee in another town about 8 years ago, there was a note on every table asking for donations to their food bank.”
