Traffic lights are going in at a busy junction near Keynsham.

A 12-week project to install lights at the Hicks Gate roundabout began today.

The improvements are part of Bath and North East Somerset Council's £60 million plan to tackle traffic congestion across the district and is part of the Greater Bristol Bus Network scheme.

There will also be a new speed limit on the approaches to the roundabout, where 45 people have been injured in the last five years.

B&NES transport cabinet member Cllr Charles Gerrish (Con, Keynsham North), said: "As a Keynsham councillor, I am aware that many people have been calling for this for many years. Road safety will be improved and the council hopes there will be less congestion at Hicks Gate with a configuration of the traffic lights letting cars, bikes, and buses out of junctions at sensible intervals."

The new signals will be fitted with technology which monitors traffic volumes and will automatically adjust signal timings. There will also be an extra bus lane on the final Bristol-bound section of the Keynsham bypass.

There is already a 40mph limit on Durley Hill but this will now be extended to the other three roads which meet at the roundabout and high friction surfacing will be laid.

There have been 38 accidents reported at the roundabout in the past five years, resulting in 45 minor injuries .

“PW, Anne Ville - buses are the way forward in any transport policy. Most enlightened people know that.

Funny you seem unable to present any argument without resorting to personal comments. If you are Bath people, I readily understand and sympathise. Fortunately, the younger generation of Bath are able to see beyond their own circumstances.”

“Um, the SIGN that TELLS you that for Bath you need the left lane!!!!!!!!!!! Regardless of there being an arrow, the road markings do not tell you that you CANNOT turn right so you are perfectly within your rights to do so. Not only that, if you are in the right lane then move to the left, im sure somewhere in a book called the Highway Code it says MIRROR SIGNAL MANOEUVRE not just go where ever you want. And i say again, i wonder why there is so many accidents.”

“It shouldn't take a chevron.....a left turn arrow means exactly that. What part of that don't you get?”

“JM of Bath, So the fact that the white lines continue around to the right without any type of chevron to prevent this happening and of course the sign prior at the bottom of the wells road that says for Bath take the left lane means nothing to you??? Just for the record, I always indicate my intentions when approaching a junction, something which many are not aware they even have fitted to their car. I hope I never see you there or we may have a coming together.”

“As I approached the roundabptu this morning I saw a huge single line of traffic. BUT rather than being there for hours, I was through in about a third of the time it takes when three lanes of traffic are all vying to join the roundabout! How can this be? Could it be that this is actually a good idea? (apart from scheduling 12 weeks of roadworks during the busiest bank holiday period of course!)”

“BUBBA..... I'm afraid you have just joined the stupid drivers club yourself by your own admission. If you are in the left lane going under the railway arch there is a very large white left turn arrow on the road telling you to turn LEFT from that lane! If you want to go to town you should take the right lane (unless you are a bus) and then move over to the left to cross Churchill Bridge. People like you deserve to be "cut up" by those in the right lane as you also make it very difficult for drivers trying to leave the Lower Bristol Road, especially if you are not signalling your intentions.”

“I'm with Bubba. The lights are only needed because the authorities no longer trust drivers to be able to cope with a) getting in the right lane, and b) giving way to the right. Roundabouts work fine so long as people know how to use them. The problem, as with all these expensive and contrived schemes, is that some people just can't drive.

My solution would be to stop these people from operating heavy machinery. Society seems to disagree, so we are stuck with this ridiculous and pointless 10-a-day death toll.”

“Going back to my previous point about observation and road signs/disicpline, last night I popped into town to pick up my better half who's bike had a puncture. At the bottom of the Wells road, I was in the left lane as directed by the signs to go into town. A nice man in an Audi decided he would cut me up under the arch from the right lane without indication or apology, he then went into the left lane and along Green Park Road. On the other side of the bridge where you exit town by the new bus station, a nice Fiat driver paid no attention to the GIVE WAY sign or the pretty white lines on the road to tell him to stop and potentially could have rammed the side of my car. He then turned right into where the 2 big pretty signs are that say buses taxi's etc only. It was only my driving skill and forward attention (And of course the fact that not many people in Bath can drive so I know what to expect) that prevented my car being written offf and either a nice Audi or Fiat going down the bodyshop. and an injury claim. (And you ask why your insurance keeps going up) Proof if proof were needed that in a little over 15 seconds there could have been accident from either, and for what??? Nothing other than 2 BAD drivers. The Police no longer call an accident that, it is a collision as some one is always to blame. Maybe we should all pay a little more attention then there wont be so many crashes and we wont need so many dam lights.”

“Please can they have traffic lights that are smarter then the traffic planners and have them only switched on for morning & evening rush hours!. The roundabouts, which we already suffer with lights, which needlessly operate 24/7 are the most ridiculous waste of electricity, time & fuel and cause pollution & driver frustration. How can a system that stops you 3 times on one roundabout with no other car in sight be something to be proud of. A child could see the flaws in that.

I would eat my steering wheel if this improves traffic flow, even during peak times. Between each change of lights, there is down time, so queues entering the roundabout will only get bigger.

On a trip into Bristol, there are 2 dual carriageways & 1 single carriageway coming into the roundabout and only 1 ongoing lane on the Bristol side. An instant, almost free of cost way of improving this, would be to scrap the bus/park & ride lane being dedicated and free up the roundabout. Traffiuc lights will not help if you can't leave the roundabout!

How about drivers using their mirrors properly, having lane discipline & not stopping on yellow box area on roundabouts. It's not just Hicks Gate that the muppets don't realise that anyone is alongside them and cut them up instead of going AROUND the roundabout! Red Lion rounabout at the top of Wellsway is a prime one for being forced into the kerb whilst turning right.

Sorry for rant, don't get me started on humps, which would kill your car if you attempted them AT THE PERMISSABLE speed limit, or one lane opposing traffic "calming" (apparently) measures, which totally distract drivers from watching out for PEDESTRIANS, for fear & self-protection from SPEEDING oncoming cars in your lane!

Do you have to be a non-car driving, bus/bicycle/pedestrian, city dweller to plan any of these flawed schemes?”

“Anil triumphs again! I'm beginning to become a real fan, amazed at how he can get reference to buses in almost any news chain despite a staggering lack of knowledge, or even residency in Bath as far as i can work out!”
