On the second anniversary of the 2007 floods which left thousands of people homeless, caused 13 deaths and approximately £2 billion damage, documentary theatre piece The Caravan presents fascinating memories and moving accounts from those people worst affected.

Next week the Ustinov is inviting an audience of just eight per performance to step inside a small caravan and hear interviews re-enacted, word for word, alongside visual and audio footage.

In the ensuing chaos of the wettest summer on record, 50,000 people were forced to live in caravans and 2,000 households remained in them one year on. Two years later 100 people are still there.

The Caravan is on tour following a Fringe First Award at Edinburgh, wide critical acclaim and sell-out runs at Edinburgh Fringe and London's Royal Court Theatre, where the caravan was parked in Sloane Square.

The touring caravan will spend a week parked near the Ustinov. The company worked in partnership with local authorities, regional media, the Environment Agency, the National Flood Forum, the Association of British Insurers, the Landmark Information group and community groups to identify, interview, consult and engage with people who had been affected by the floods.

They found that the story of the floods inadvertently became the story of how human disregard for the environment could and had ruined people's lives, taking away their homes and making them refugees in their own communities.

The audience is invited to read and listen to the full interviews after the performance. An exhibition space also includes photos and documents donated by interviewees and information on flooding and the environment.

As a fluid interactive project, there is also an opportunity for the public to contribute by recording their thoughts on the floods. These contributions will feed into the future development of the piece.

The Caravan will take place near the Ustinov from Tuesday, July 7 to Saturday, July 11 at 1.30pm, 2.15pm (not Tuesday), 6.30pm, 7.15pm, 8pm and 8.45pm.
