TENNIS TeamBath Tennis Academy player Toby Martin lifted the AEGON under-18 boys Grand Prix Masters title at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

Martin produced a convincing and confident display to become the Academy's second consecutive Masters winner, following Richard Gabb's success in 2009.

Martin, 16, joined the Academy in September and attends Ralph Allen School. He is on the LTA's AASE programme.

His opponent in the first round, Ben Churchman, retired, which led to a match up with top seed Gavin Davison in the quarter-final.

Martin won 6-0 7-6 before fighting back from a set and 4-1 down to beat Leicestershire's Connor Glennon 4-6 6-4 6-2 in the semis.

A break in each set took Martin to a 6-4 6-3 victory over Joe Mills from Sussex in the final.

Martin said: "Overall I felt my shot selection was good and I deliberately sacrificed some power in my ground strokes at times, which decreased my unforced errors.

"My serve and return worked well, this all built my confidence. I also had a great week of preparation at Bath so was feeling really good going into the tournament."

TeamBath director of tennis Barry Scollo was quick to praise Martin.

"Toby played simple, effective tennis," he said. "He has done the basic things so well and consistently.

"Young players sometimes lose sight of this and it can lead to overplaying, confusion and errors.

"Since his arrival at Bath, Toby has got himself in great shape with the help of Ian Macdonald (coach) and Alex Cockram (strength and conditioning coach), so credit is due to our whole team.

"We are all delighted that he has been rewarded with this title. He should be very proud of himself."

Martin recently won his first World Junior (ITF) event and is looking to continue his good form in Denmark, Germany and Luxembourg next month.

As part of his prize from his Masters win Martin receives a wild card entry into the main draw of an LTA men's pro-series event.

TeamBath was well represented in the draw at the Masters, with Sid Hazarika and Dan Elston meeting in round one.

Hazarika won a close, high-quality match 6-2 3-6 6-4 but then lost 7-5 6-3 to Ben Davis in the quarter-final.

Elston went on to appear in the consolation final, beating Michael Suleau 6-4 6-4 and Simon Woodall 6-2 6-0 before losing 3-6 2-6 to Sam Fleck.

In the girls' draw Taro Keens won her first-round match against Brielle Luton 6-4 6-2 but then lost 4-6 3-6 to Caitlin Hindmarsh.
