Timsbury stalwart Roger Bird will have a special evening held in his honour at the village's Conygre Hall on Friday, November 30 (7.30pm).

An outstanding wicketkeeper in his playing days, Bird has been responsible for the development of a generation of young cricketers during a 60-year connection with the club.

Bird was the manager of Somerset's youth sides for many years, with former county cricketers Keith and Kevin Parsons and present Timsbury captain Mark Sage among those whose talents he nurtured.

He has also run a number of Timsbury's youth sides and was instrumental in forming the club's 4th XI, which gives youngsters the chance to develop their skills.

Bird still umpires for the 3rd XI and he and his supportive wife, Yvonne, continue to serve food after matches on a Saturday – a task they have carried out for more than 30 years. In fact, there are few roles Bird has not carried out in the club, serving as a captain, fixture secretary and member of the social committee.

Timsbury captain Sage said: "Roger has been an influential member of our club for many years and generations have reason to thank him for the efforts he has put in on their behalf."

Anybody interested in attending or helping with the catering can contact Mark Sage on 01761 435344 or 07894 014705.
