Team Bath Buccs 1st XI player Tim Davenport reflects on a difficult start to 2012-13...

After missing out on promotion at the end of last season, we would have been hoping to kick this season's campaign off with a win.

Unfortunately, things didn't quite happen for us at Cheltenham on Saturday and we were soundly beaten by a side who have clearly prepared well for the new season.

Conversely, our preparations for the season haven't been the best, with players arriving back late for pre-season and a number having still not arrived.

As a student club, it is something that plagues us every year and we've had to learn to deal with it as best we can.

We're notoriously slow starters as a result and, as we struggled to get any sort of grip on Saturday's game, Cheltenham took full advantage.

They played quick, simple hockey and we just couldn't match them.

The squad has had a big change in personnel over the summer, with a number of senior players leaving the club following the completion of their degrees.

They are big losses but we've recruited well, bringing in some exciting young players to fill the gaps left by the likes of Lewis Prosser and Johnny Kinder.

These players will of course take time to settle into the squad and I think that, given the amount of new faces we have, we need to be realistic about our ambitions for the season ahead.

We'll hope to build our team around these new players and if this takes a season where we don't challenge for the title, then that is something we'll be prepared for and will have to accept.

This weekend we entertain Cardiff, who enjoyed a good opening-day win over Firebrands. Having finished third last season, they will be hoping to go even better this year and we know we'll be in for another tough encounter.

We'll certainly be looking to put in a better performance than the one we gave at Cheltenham as we look to get our first points on the board as early as possible.
