1st XI player Tim Davenport is heartened by Team Bath Buccs' recent progress...

Sunday's game against Birmingham University was a strange one.

Compared with the previous week's clash with Exeter, it was a much more cagey affair with few chances for either side until the later stages of the match.

Birmingham sat back and played a half-court press after going ahead early on.

This denied us space to attack into and we found it difficult to break them down. It was clear we were going to have to be patient, which isn't something we're often very good at.

Even when our captain, George Farrant, levelled the scores just before the break it didn't change the way our opponents were playing. Birmingham were disciplined and while we seemed to enjoy more possession in the second half, we were being made to wait for that golden opportunity.

Thankfully we remained cool-headed and eventually a chance presented itself and we took it. It was a big turning point because, with minutes remaining, Birmingham then had to come out to try and salvage something from the game.

They pressed us more aggressively as they looked for an equaliser, leaving gaps at the back which were able to exploit.

It was a just reward for what was a patient, disciplined performance from us. Every week I'm more and more impressed with how much this squad has matured from previous seasons.

We are still not the complete package and we simply must stop giving away early leads but, on the whole, we seem to look a lot more assured week by week and we're slowly gathering speed.

After a poor start, we've put ourselves in a great position and it's important that we stay focused to ensure we're in the mix come the Christmas break.
