Tight spot . . . lucky escape for elderly driver in Bath parking drama
An elderly driver has had a lucky escape after he accidently reversed his car into and over some park railings in Bath.
Police were called to Park Lane, next to Royal Victoria Park, at around 5.30pm last night to reports that a VW Golf had hit a Ford Fiesta, before ending up crashed into the railings.

Nobody was injured, but both cars were damaged in the incident, so officers closed the road for a short time while the scene was cleared.
No arrests were made.

“in regard to uncle***'s comment, it actually happened at about 3.45pm as I was walking by this scene at 3.50pm and the police hadn't arrived yet.”

“Roger - if you look at the last but one photo it shows the rear nearside wheel of the other car somewhat bent out of its normal angle. My guess at what happened is that the VW was heading in or out of one of the drives opposite this and for some reason selected reverse and hit the accellerator very hard. He then shot backwards straight across the road and rammed the parked silver car round and over the kerb (bending the wheel) before mounting the railings. There's also no visible damage on the silver car which just leaves the very back of it which is concealed in the photo - a parking spat would be more likely to see more damage down the side as they tried to grab the space.
The speed/force must have been pretty high to shove the silver car round, bend the wheel mounting like that and still have enough left to get up the railings.
Why it happened is presumably known only to the driver and the police! That said I suspect he might struggle to get insurance at next renewal if he is over 70 with that accident on his record.”

“Curious that the adjacent car is at the same angle and right up against the railings. Was that parked or moving? Or perhaps both were after the same parking space. Plenty of opportunity for idle speculation, anyway.”

“For those who doubt the Chron's reporting and believe this chap may have swerved to avoid a child (etc etc), may I refer you to the five rather unambiguous photographs at the top of the page.”

“DaveF
No arrest needs to be made for some one to be dealt with for dangerous driving. Provided the person is happy to co-operate and some other criteria are met; ( I think its Code G of PACE, its been a while since I did traffic law!!) then they can be interviewed voluntarily and reported for summons.
You'd like to think that route was chosen!”

“It must be a fault with the cars! I just heard another car went through a shop window in Essex in revers! No injuries!”
