Bath Festivals' chief executive Belinda Kidd said they had been overwhelmed by the response.

She said: "This year's festival brings some of the greatest living writers and thinkers to Bath. Chronicle readers responded so positively to the priority booking offer in the paper in early January that it has had an enormous impact on sales."

The festival, which is sponsored by The Independent, starts on March 1 and runs for ten days.

Artists and writers who will be in attendance also include P.D. James, Pat Barker, Kate Mosse, Darcey Bussell, Tracy Chevalier, Will Gompertz, Gavin Esler and Polly Toynbee.

For more information about the festival line-up and to buy tickets go to www.bathfestivals.org.uk or phone Bath Box Office on 01225 463362.
