People were given the chance to declutter in an operation at Southdown.

Removing graffiti and untaxed vehicles was also part of the exercise which saw more than three tonnes of garden waste and rubble and 10 lorryloads of wood and electrical items taken away over three days.

The council's Deep Clean, Keep Clean operation saw more than 34 items of graffiti removed, a number of street lights repaired and new litter bins installed.

Twenty-five vehicles whose paperwork appeared out of order when checked against Automatic Number Plate Registration technology were also identified.

The exercise was carried out by Bath and North East Somerset Council in partnership with Avon and Somerset Police, Avon Fire and Rescue Service, the Arson Task Force and Somer Housing.

Cllr Paul Crossley (Lib Dem, Southdown), said the event had benefited the local community.

He said: "It was a very successful day and we got rid of a tremendous amount of stuff.

"This is a good example of the local community and the council working together."

An information point was also available throughout the three days in Twerton High Street where officers from the council, fire service and police were available to answer questions about local issues.

Pupils from Hayesfield School were among those who got involved as they staged a litter pick in Rosewarn Close.

Cllr Charles Gerrish, (Con, Keynsham North) cabinet member for customer services on B&NES, said: "The council had 16 local volunteers, pupils from Hayesfield School and the Whiteway Empowerment Project involved in keeping their community clean and improving the public realm."
