Team Bath's Jess Hopton nets English National Badminton title

Team Bath's Jess Hopton was crowned as the new Under-17 English National Badminton Champion over the weekend.

She had to do it the hard way, beating second seed Tsui-Yee Lau and joint third seed Lydia Powell en route to the final.

Fifth-seed Hopton, who also represents Avon at badminton, then overcame Ira Banerjee 21-17, 14-21, 24-22 to take the title.

She just missed out on gold in the women’s doubles after partnering Powell to the final, where they lost out.

Hopton is a member of the Team Bath Futures squad and also trains once a week with head coach Pete Bush at the University of Bath high performance centre.

“I’m really pleased for Jess,” said Bush. “She has worked really hard at her game and it is great to see her become an English champion.”
